A Walk on Stephens Street
Flowers & Macro Photography
Every time I go for a walk in my neighborhood, I end up wishing I had a camera with me. The gardens are filled with beautiful flowers of all kinds, from perfectly manicured yards to “urban wilds.”
This week, the ones that drew me out with my macro lens were the tiniest of purple flowers. I pass them every day on my morning walks, and they always intrigue me. They’re in a bundle of flowers that look like a forest at the end of a long stalk. It reminds me of a world in a Dr. Seuss book.
The tricky part about capturing them with my camera is that even on a still day, which it was, these flowers at the end of their long stem are still bobbing and wiggling about. The slightest movement of air is like a large gust of wind for these flowers.
Normally, a tripod or monopod is beneficial with macro photography, but today I simply wandered out of my house and down the street and took them free hand. Squatting down to get the best angle, I took a deep breath to steady myself and snapped away. A fast shutter speed and a narrow depth of field enabled me to capture just the tiny flowers in focus.
The other flowers I photographed are ones that I planted in our front garden. Having tended the flowers all year it is always fun to capture some macro photos of them to see the details and textures in a whole new way.
For me, that is my favorite part about macro photography, especially of flowers. I love being able to get up close with the flowers and capture the depth of detail that is in each one, the flecks of pollen that the bees chase, the varying colors, the tiny ‘hairs’ on the stems. It is like seeing a whole new world that we normally don’t stop to notice.
When you look closely, it is amazing the beauty that you’ll see.
